N-400 NATURALIZATION INTERVIEW

Your Interview with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services on your N-400, Application for Naturalization

YOU MUST BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO YOUR INTERVIEW:


The interview notice (Form I-797C, Notice of Action) that has the date and location of your interview.

Your original birth certificate with certified English translation (& if not in English)

◻- An English translation ◻ - Certificate of translation


Your legal permanent resident card (“green card”)

◻Your passport or one other form of state-issued photo ID is recommended.

Original Marriage Certificate (for every time you were married in the US or Abroad)


Original Divorce Decree (for each time you were divorced in the US or Abroad)


Tax transcripts or tax returns for the past five (5) years (three years if you are applying as the spouse of a US citizen)


Original Certificates of DIsposition for any and all criminal matters, any arrest, indictment, or other law enforcement encounter other than a traffic stop (regardless of whether it was dismissed, expunged, dropped, or if you have any other reason to believe you don’t have to).


IF YOU ARE APPLYING AS THE SPOUSE OF A U.S. CITIZEN


If you are applying after three years as a permanent resident pursuant to your marriage to a U.S. citizen then you must bring evidence showing that you are currently married to and living with your US citizen spouse and provide the following documentation :

Proof of the U.S. citizenship of your spouse

Original Birth Certificate Certificate of Naturalization U.S. Passport


Proof of joint residency (for each of the three preceding years)

◻ - Joint-lease/deed ◻ - Utility bills ◻ - Letters/Affidavits

Tax returns/transcripts for the past three years showing “married” filing status.


Proof of joint-finances

◻ - Joint bank accounts ◻ - insurance documents ◻ - Letters/Affidavits

TAX TRANSCRIPTS

Your tax documents can be accessed using the IRS website if you do not have copies already or an accountant that would have these documents for you. You may also request your tax transcripts directly from the IRS website here.

CIVICS EXAMINATION

Study materials for this test can be found on the USCIS website at https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/find-study-materials-and-resources/study-for-the-test (the 2020 civics test is not being used for interviews scheduled after April 2021). You can see all 100 questions and answers on the USCIS website at the following URL: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/questions-and-answers/100q.pdf.

USCIS further provides study materials on their website such as a pamphlet and this study guide. You can take practice civics exams on the website here.

I recommend that you know your Senators and Congressional representatives, as they tend to ask that question at most interviews. You find that information at senate.gov & house.gov using your postal code to look up your representatives.

SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION

This only applies to you if you were physically present in the US between the age of 17 and 26-years old, you may be asked why you did not register for the selective service (the list of males eligible to be drafted by the US military if necessary). You can look this up at https://www.sss.gov/.
